| Deciding
to have a laser skin resurfacing is not just a medical decision;
it is a personal decision. The perception you have of yourself
defines who you are and how you introduce yourself to the world.
For many people, a laser skin resurfacing provides an enhanced
sense of self-esteem and can positively influence how they relate
to others. The more you know about the procedure, the better
equipped you will be to make the decision to have a laser skin
resurfacing.
Aging
is a dynamic process that occurs in every person on an individual
basis. Aging is not only predetermined genetically, but is
also influenced by environmental factors such as sun, smoking,
stress and overall skin care.
Dr.
Dion Chavis offers laser technology which removes surface
imperfections and reduces fine lines, superficial wrinkles,
sun spots, acne scarring and lip creases. Although ultrapulse
laser will not remove excess redundant skin, it is designed
to gently erase skin imperfections layer-by-layer, helping
to stimulate regeneration and provide smoother, fresher, younger
looking skin. The laser can target the treatment areas with
precision, creating great results for the patient.
Dr.
Chavis will assist you in determining areas of concern you
may have and what procedures may be appropriate for you. Remember
that medical personnel can give you their recommendations
and family members and friends may tell you what they think
you should do, but only you can make the final decision about
having ultrapulse laser skin resurfacing.
THIS
INFORMATION IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU MAKE AN EDUCATED, INFORMED
DECISION REGARDING FACELIFT SURGERY.
Choosing
Ultrapulse Laser Skin Resurfacing
Before
you undergo laser surgery, you need to be well informed about
the procedure, the results you can expect, and all of the
potential risks and complications that can occur. Every persons
decision is different and should be based on needs, desires
and expectations.
This
technique is a safe and effective way to improve sun damaged
skin, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as acne scarring of
the face. Laser resurfacing is virtually non-invasive, bloodless
and provides a precise rapid removal of tissue. This allows
for decreased post-operative pain, a decreased chance of infection,
and a reduced recovery period. Fine lines around the mouth,
as well as "crows feet", are areas of the
face that show exceptional improvement after this procedure.
Although
laser resurfacing can accurately target many problem areas,
it may decrease, not totally eliminate stretch marks and scars.
Laser helps to tighten the skin but, unfortunately, cannot
get rid of redundant excess skin.
The
Surgery
Ultra
pulse laser skin resurfacing is accomplished by using a high
beam of light to VAPORIZE tissue, which leads to tightening
of the skin. The precise depth of the laser light is controlled
by your surgeon making the procedure safe and the results
predictable. The treatment preserves the underlying tissues,
and the initial healing process takes approximately seven
to ten days. To insure the patients comfort during the
procedure, laser resurfacing is done under an intravenous
sedation. Patients having this procedure generally receive
an anti-viral medication pre-operatively. You will need a
driver to assist you in your ride home, since you will be
sedated for the surgery.
There
are no sutures or incisions made with laser resurfacing. You
should not take aspirin, aspirin products, or Vitamin E supplements
2 weeks prior to and 2 days after your laser surgery. We will
provide you with a list of products containing aspirin prior
to your surgery. YOUR RECOVERY following your surgery, the
treated area will be bandaged or 2-3 days. After the initial
bandages are removed, you will need to keep the area moist
with ointment or dressing as instructed by your discharge
nurse. There will be swelling and bruising to the areas; however,
using ice and sleeping with your head elevated will help reduce
this.
During
the first 2-4 days the skin may ooze or weep a clear fluid.
The treated skin will have a pink coloration, which may persist
for up to 6-8 weeks. This coincides with new collagen (skin)
formation. Make-up can be applied to the skin 7-10 days following
surgery. Patients are advised to avoid sun and strenuous exercise
for a period of two weeks following treatment and to use a
sunscreen of at least #15 UVB thereafter to prevent pigment
changes to the skin.
